Trans person: *Looks at media, sees no trans people, only cis people. Looks in health textbooks written by cis people and finds almost no mention of transgender people, and if they do it's reduced to a short paragraph that overgeneralizes information. Told that their being trans is just a phase by cis people. Told that they can be trans but they have to be okay with being invalidated and need to put cis feelings first. Was largely unaware that trans people even existed for a large part of their life, thus had to deal with confusing emotions that often coincide with feelings of depression, anxiety, and inferiority. Possibly bullied at school and called slurs and beat up through adolescence or relentlessly teased and hurt, by cis people. Told that they're not right and deserve to die. Literally actually killed, by cis people.*
Trans person: Cis people suck.
Cis person: Whoa hey now haha. I understand some cis people suck, but make it clear that's what you mean! Make sure to say "transphobes" instead, or at least use the word "some." Not all cis people are like that.
Trans person: Well... Yeah. My parents are cis. I have cis friends. I know that not all cis people suck... Just collectively as a group you kind of have everything going for you.
Cis person: Yeah but saying "cis people suck" isn't going to solve anything. You can't fight hate with hate.
Trans person: I'm... Just venting. I've been hurt. And cis people as a group, maybe not individually, are the cause.
Cis person: Aha, yes, see? So not all cis people! Make it clear when you speak bad about cis people you mean not all of them!
Trans person: Wouldn't your effort be better spent dismantling all the social constructs and norms and systems of oppression that keep me in this position? Instead of policing the language I use to vent my emotions? When I say "cis people suck" it's about me, and about trans people, and the suffering we endure because of the majority of cis people. When you try to derail the discussion and make it about how we need to be careful about our word choice so we don't make any cis people upset, you make it about YOU, and not me. Not us, trans people. You make it about YOUR hurt feelings. The effort you spend trying to correct the way I talk should be going into something that will actually ensure my rights in the long run.
Cis person: Okay but can you please be sure to use "some cis people" instead in the future? For my feelings. It makes me upset. I don't like it.
Trans person: Nevermind.

passion:

if the whole “stop fighting fire with fire” thing was real, we’d see white people enslaved, cisgender people disproportionately targeted for abuse and murder, and heterosexuals needing safe spaces just to survive high school. but we don’t. we’re not fighting “fire with fire,” we’re fighting your centuries-old arson with a candle

Sorry it’s really wordy, but I wanted to make sure i wasn’t being too vague, but at the same time I also feel like i was not thorough enough with some of these topics. Either way, this is just all from my standpoint so feel free to correct me if i got something wrong. or if you have any questions feel free to ask, but just keep in mind i am only one person, and not an all-knowing encyclopedia so i may not always have answers for everyone and some things are better left answered by other people.
